The Story of the Start of Chaukhambha House of Sanskrit Publications
With Chaukhambha being an acclaimed cultural hub for Sanskrit works, reliable and authentic Ayurveda and an age– old resource for learning, it is no surprise that to serve the great cause of promoting Sanskrit and an fulfill the inner urge to promote the rich cultural heritage of Varanasi,Late Shri Hari Das Gupta laid the grand edifice of “Chaukhambha Publications” in 1892 A.D. which has been a renowned publishing house for Sanskrit and Ayurveda,not only in India but all over the world.
Though it was been a a global community effort to pull off the work done around the globe for the advancement and development of Sanskrit literature and Ayurveda, for embodying the vast works and literary masterpieces under one roof, the founder of Chaukhamba Sanskrit Sansthan, deserves special acknowledgement.
Shri Hari Das Gupta established the publishing house not with a lucrative motive but to use Print Media as a tool for the development, advancement and upliftment of India’s rich cultural heritage and ancient science which is inclusive of the great ancient texts and path-breaking medical findings. It is essential to mention that since the commencement of the publication printing press in India(1800 A.D) Chaukhambha has been using this tool very efficiently to bring Varanasi into its well-deserved center-stage for its work in Sanskrit literature and scriptures.
The Evolution of Chaukhambha Sanskrit Sansthan Publications
Since its inception the publication House has been rendering constant invaluable service to the cause of Ayurveda and Sanskrit. It has maintained a consistent and noteworthy schedule of publications for more than 130 years. Their first series published as ‘Chaukhambha Sanskrit Series’ was described as a “Collection of Most Rare and Extraordinary Ancient Sanskrit Work” consisting of 104 volumes.
Through the flow of time the Gupta family has worked tirelessly with tremendous effort and dedication which has resulted is eleven new series coming into existence covering almost every field of ‘Indianism’. Till date nearly three thousand titles covering every arena of Indian art, philosophy, literature, culture and wisdom have been published.
This publishing House has also enlightened its readers and eternal learners with extremely useful and educational subjects on a variety of topics bringing in light the rare ancient works of Sanskrit and hidden gems of Ayurveda.
